Corrections to the pair production by high energy muons(pdf)

The energy reconstruction of high energy muons propagating through a detector like IceCube is based on Monte Carlo simulations such as PROPOSAL or GEANT4. To lower the systematic uncertainties of the reconstructed results, the interaction of the particles through matter has to be understood as precisely as possible. At high energies bremsstrahlung, pair production and photonuclear interactions are the dominant processes. In this work the currently used pair production cross section is investigated concerning further effects and corrections, for instance the description of the interaction with the target atom.
